Assessment of Communication Programs In Support of Polio Eradication

In 2003-2004, CHANGE carried out an assessment of communication programs in support of polio eradication for USAID. The assessment reviewed the design and implementation of programs for advocacy, social mobilization, and information, education and communication activities. The report also examines the effectiveness of communication programs of the Polio Eradication Initiative and the interaction and coordination among polio partners.

Community Surveillance Kit

The Community Surveillance Kit was developed as a resource for countries to improve detection, reporting and follow-up of cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) -- an achievement required for countries, regions and the entire world to be declared polio-free. The Kit has been designed to facilitate ongoing community involvement in detecting and reporting other illnesses and events of public health importance in addition to AFP.

The Kit and accompanying materials are for use by a “Community Surveillance Coordinator” to orient communities, work with them to select “Community Surveillance Volunteers,” support those volunteers and bring reports of AFP or other important diseases to the immediate attention of the closest health facility.

The CD-ROM contains English and French versions of the current Community Surveillance Kit.

Communication for Immunization and Polio Eradication: Joint Case Studies by BASICS, WHO and UNICEF

The case studies were carried out in five sub-Saharan countries: Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria and Zambia. The objectives of the country studies were to:
  • Document communication activities for polio eradication, routine immunization and surveillance;
  • Exchange effective and innovative experiences;
  • Provide recommendations for the improvement of communication interventions
