Seeking Skilled Care in Kenya
Tools

Many of the decisions for changes in maternal survival program content and emphasis were based on available evidence of effectiveness of interventions and Western medical models of obstetric danger signs and obstetric risks. Tools for Seeking Skilled Care (Danger Signs Plus) help programs understand how to support women to seek skilled care during and after childbirth. The tools guide programs through behavior-based research to explore current practices and the main barriers and supports to skilled careseeking. The research tools are also designed to investigate new roles for traditional care providers that would be acceptable to families as well as the providers themselves.

Behaviors for Skilled Attendance A list of ideal behaviors for all of the groups involved in decision making for use of skilled attendance at birth and early postpartum. Can be used to decide what groups to include in the research and to design behavior-based interview questions.
Qualitative Research Timetable A sample timetable with estimated time required for each step in the design and implementation of maternal survival behavior change research activities.
Qualitative Research Plan A sample research plan for qualitative research on use of skilled attendance.
Research Objectives A list of overall and specific research objectives for each category of respondent. The list can be used as is or adapted according to program needs.
Community Interviewer Training An outline for training community interviewers who already have some experience in qualitative research.
Guides for Investigation of Skilled Attendance
(15 Instruments)
Sample guides for in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with women and other groups who influence use of skilled attendance.

Tools for Projective Techniques

Sample drawings for use during interviews that make use of projective techniques.
Maternal Survival Terms A list of key maternal survival terms. Research plans should define these terms in standard medical terminology, local language and slang terms. Expand the list to reflect additional terms as indicated by ongoing research. These locally appropriate words and phrases allow design of more effective BC materials.
Complication Narratives Results Grid Use this grid/matrix to abstract and analyze results from the complication narrative interviews.
Sample of Complication Narratives (Kenya) An example of complication narrative results. Used to "visualize" complication narratives.
Behavior Change Strategy Worksheet A worksheet used to organize research results and develop a comprehensive, research-based behavior change strategy.
Communications Strategy Worksheet A worksheet to assist in developing the communication component of a BC strategy, including research-based plan for content and format of messages and materials.
Stages of Behavior Change: Defining Indicators
Framework for one type of evaluation of the behavior change component of maternal survival programs. Used to document readiness to change within the "stages of change" continuum pre- and post- BC intervention. Allows more fine-tuned documentation of stepwise increase in behavior change achieved by programs.
