The CHANGE Dengue Control
Program in El Salvador is applying a behavior change
approach to reduce dengue fever. The approach is based
on CHANGE’s experience in dengue
prevention in the Dominican Republic. Dengue is
transmitted by mosquito (Aedes egypti) and the focus
of the program was on reducing/eliminating breeding
sites. With CHANGE assistance, communities developed
and implemented innovative solutions to water storage
and management to prevent the spread of dengue in households
and communities. CHANGE also provided training in behavior
change approaches for national and local public health
officers, Unicef, PAHO, local municipalities and NGOs.
