How can strategies that target capacity
building in health communications be developed? what
resources and needs are present in Peru and Latin American
to accomplish such objectives? What programs are necessary
at different education levels?
With the objective of discussing these questions and
articulating new programs for future action, the Pan-American
Health Organization, the Health Program of the United
States Agency for International Development in Peru,
and the CHANGE Project (AED/Manoff) decided to organize
a conference-workshop and bring together experts in
the fields of health and communications.
Representatives from the organizing agencies, Peruvian
and Latin American universities, the ministries of Health
and Education, non-governmental organizations from the
United States, Nicaragua and Peru, and international
agencies like UNICEF attended the conference. The Peruvian
universities represented were, Universidad Católica,
Universidad de Lima, Universidad Cayetan Heredia, y
Universidad del Pacífico from the Consorcio de
Universidades, and the national universities of Trujillo,
Cuzco, el Centro, and Huamanga. University professors
from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Venezuela
and the US (John Hopkins Universities) attended as well.
This report summarizes the presentations and discussions
that took place during the conference- workshop. The
first section contains a brief summary of the presentations
about international perspectives on health communications.
The second section discusses the lessons learned in
health communications with respect to the need for capacity
building. The third section treats the main guidelines
for curricular development. The fourth section includes
the functional map and proposals for curricular designs
in health communications. The appendixes provide additional
information and supporting materials.
Our goal is that this report is useful for the experts
in communication and public health who are responsible
for the design and implementation of capacity building
programs, and for others involved in the process of
defining competencies for the strengthening for local
capacities. The attached materials are not final drafts
but documents in progress that will be adapted by differentinstitutions
and agents according to their needs and audiences. It
is for this reason that this report aims not only at
documenting the presentations and results of the conference
but also at contributing ideas for future activities.
The report is available in Spanish only.
